'The impact of fire is much more than just area burned,' Stavros said.
'It’s lives lost, infrastructure damaged, degraded air quality. We can use our scientific understanding to inform systematic approaches to managing how we live in a world with fire: how and where we build, how and where we perform maintenance on power lines, etc. Everybody cares when they can see and smell the smoke, but when it’s gone, they stop,' she added.
